Pronouns Revisited
Many writers have trouble selecting the right pronouns when they are writing about a specific group or individual members of that group. You should always use singular pronouns for singular nouns. Really. A breed of dog is singular, as is a company. If you are writing about a pet monkey, the pet monkey can be referred to as ââ¬Å"heâ⬠or ââ¬Å"sheâ⬠. . . or even ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. The monkey wonââ¬â¢t mind. But your editor (who may or may not be a monkey) will mind if you refer to the monkey as ââ¬Å"they.â⬠Correct: A pet monkey can be very high maintanence. It will live a long time. Pet monkeys can be very high-maintanence creatures. They also live a long time. Incorrect: A pet monkey can be very high maintenance. They can live a long time. Another faux-pas in the writing world is using the pronoun ââ¬Å"one,â⬠when you should be using ââ¬Å"heâ⬠or ââ¬Å"she.â⬠Using ââ¬Å"oneâ⬠is old fashioned and stuffy sounding, as in: When one is out calling, one must leave calling cards. Use ââ¬Å"heâ⬠or ââ¬Å"sheâ⬠ââ¬Å"he/sheâ⬠can be cumbersome; the reader will forgive you for choosing one or the other in order to sound up-to-date on writing trends. (ââ¬Å"Theyâ⬠is becoming more accepted, but it still rankles to prescriptivists.) If youââ¬â¢re addressing the audience, itââ¬â¢s also perfectly acceptable to refer to your reader as ââ¬Å"you.â⬠This sounds personable and makes your article accessible to the reader. Examples: A quilter will want to make sure she chooses a pattern before selecting fabrics. The favorite political candidate may not always win. He may have to wait until next term to run for office again. Your poodle will need proper grooming. Have a sweater handy if she must go outside in cold weather. (Or, to revisit the idea in the first part of this post: A snake is a popular pet. It will not keep you warm at night, but it it will amaze you with its ability to swallow live rats whole.) What do you do in the event of a food shortage? Do you stockpile food, grow your own vegetables, or take to the streets and join your community in a riot? If you have any questions about using pronouns, please ask in the forum, and our friendly community of writers and editors will answer them or point you in the direction of resources that will help you with your own writing. Indian Removal essays
Indian Removal essays The 1830s removal of the Cherokee Indians from their ancestral land to distant reservations in Oklahoma, known as the Trail of Tears, represented a marked divergence from American national policy. The decision made by the Jackson administration differed in two conspicuous ways: the removal proceeded from a gross breach of treaty and sovereignty rather than a coerced Teformulation of a treaty; it defied the entire Judicial branch of government by going against the Supreme Court. Although the historical trend was building up to greater and greater clashes between Indians, the national policy had not overtly changed until Jackson proposed the Indian Removal Act. Beginning in 1721 the colonies had made treaties with Native Americans (Doc. A). Successive US Treaties took away successive amounts of land (Doc. A). Although coerced, these treaties were superficially legal. Henry Knox, secretary of war under Washingtons administration and negotiator of the Cherokee Treaty of Holston, summarized the possibilities for the United States as follows, ...two modes present themselves...; the first of which is by raising an army and [destroying the resisting] tribes entirely, or 2ndly by forming treaties of peace with them (Doc. B). America did in fact employ both options; taking away increasing amounts of lands from Indians via treaties and outright conquering the lands of Indians who resisted. However, Knox further observed, An inquiry would arise, whether ...the United States have a clear right ... to proceed with the destruction or expulsion of the savages ...The Indians being the prior occupants possess the right of the soil. It cannot be taken from them unless by their free consent, or by the right of conquest of a just war. (Doc B). As this is the national policy existing under Washington, it can clearly be seen to be contrary to Jackson who removed the ...

Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 5
Management - Essay Example And, of course, they have an advantage in that they are known for offering the lowest prices around. Although a very successful corporation, Walmart does have some weaknesses and challenges. One weakness is that because they have expanded into so many different areas they may lose out to competitors who are more narrowly focused and specialized. They also only have a presence in relatively few countries in addition to the U.S. Yet the fact that Walmart doesnââ¬â¢t have a dominant presence in other countries means that the opportunity to obtain a larger presence in these countries still exists. So even though Walmart is large, there are still opportunities for expansion. One threat to Walmart is that being number one means that you always have a target on your back, so to speak. There will always be competition and price wars with Walmart both locally and globally. Amazon.com, for example, poses a threat to Walmart because they are known for having the lowest prices around as well. Also, the gap that Walmart used to have on low-cost manufacturing is closing and other stores are now able to manufacture for less as well (Marketingteacher.com, 2010). After researching these sources the best strategy for Walmart in the future is to continue to be the low-cost and low-price leader and continue to expand globally. They should also continue to form strategic alliances locally and internationally as they have done so with companies like Stanley Works and America Online (Walmart,

Artist Report Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Artist Report - Research Paper Example Approaching Noise is done in oil upon a 40 x 34 inch wood panel. The woman in the painting is a brunette with her hair pulled back into a bun. The light skinned model has her arms crossed over her chest to prevent the olive green military style shirt from falling down. She is in a subtle, serene mood as she looks towards the ground in wonderment. The model is standing in front of a whitewashed grey wall with letting and numbers upon the wall behind her. The light that falls upon the model comes from the upper right, in front of the model. The hues used in the painting show the realism that the viewer seems to be immersed in when looking at the painting. The realism shown by Kassan in this painting has a photorealistic quality to it. One could almost reach out and touch the model as though she was standing right in front of the viewer. The realism also allows us to interpret that her skin is soft and looks to be in her mid 20s wearing pink nail polish. Also, the gradation of the painting seems subtle and continuous like a person would see in real life and stark and in contrast in the same way as though a person were blocking the light from another source. There are two places in the painting that seem to flow away from the focal point of her face. Her eyes seem to bring the viewer to follower what she is looking at by going towards the bottom of the painting. Furthermore, you can also follow the flow of her hair as you see the strands of hair pulled back into the bun atop the back of her head. He uses the asymmetrical balance of the human body and draws upon the fact that not all painting has to be symmetrically balanced to be a great work of art. The words on the wall to her right seem to balance out the space taken up by the model on the left side of the painting. Approaching Noise allows the viewer to feel as though they are standing in the studio with Kassan as he is working with his subject on this particular painting with the amount of time

The Petrov Affair Essay Example for Free
The Petrov Affair Essay The ââ¬Å"Petrov Affairâ⬠started in April 1954 when Vladimir Petrov and his wife Edvokia defected to Australia. The affair finally finished today, the 11th of December 1955; a day after the Federal Election in Australia when Robert Menzies was elected. The Events That Saw It Unfold The Petrov Affair occurred around the 3rd of April last year, when Vladimir Petrov, who was the cause of the Petrov Affair, defected to Australia under top-secret conditions. On arrival in Sydney, he was taken to a safe house on Sydneyââ¬â¢s north shore. Only 3 or 4 Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, ASIO, officers knew about his defection to Australia, his wife Evdokia didnââ¬â¢t even know about this! Once the soviet embassy was aware of this defection, they accused the Australian Authorities of kidnapping him. Reason For His Defection One of Petrovââ¬â¢s main reasons for defecting here to Australia was to secure Ron Richardsââ¬â¢, ASIO Deputy Director, secret documents containing evidence of Soviet espionage and infiltration of the Australian Government agencies. Richards was in charge of this operation and made the one of the possible code words for the defection ââ¬Å"Cabin Candidateâ⬠. Another reason for defection was that he feared being arrested and killed by the Russian Government after he was associated with Beria and that if he went back to Russia, he would be purged as ââ¬Å"Beria Manâ⬠. What Menzies Did About It Robert Menzies, the Prime Minister of Australia at the time, caused a stir when he announced to the House of Representatives that Petrov brought with him documents that revealed Soviet Espionage in Australia. He called a Royal Commission to investigate these allegations. Herbert Evatt, The Opposition Leader at the time, accused Menzies of arranging the defections to coincide with the election. After this happened, Menzies ended up winning the election, even though everyone thought Labour was going to succeed. Menzies denied that he had advanced knowledge of Petrovââ¬â¢s defection to Australia, but he did not deny that he exploited it.

The Burden of Prejudice and Racism :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers
The Burden of Racism The sizzling streams of sunlight were just beautifully glimmering down on the crisp green school yard. Such a wonderful day that was. Nothing could have ruined it. Little Jimmy, since it was such a wonderful day decided to go to the corner store and buy himself a little treat. As little Jimmy started walking over to the store, clouds flocked over the dazzling sun and the sudden pitch dark meant no trouble. On the other side of the road were three white boys from Jimmy's same school. Upon recognizing Jimmy, the boys ran over the street to where he was. "Hey Negro, what's up?", one of the white Boy said. "Did your mamma pack you enough to eat to-day?", another hooted. "Just leave me alone.", Little Jimmy said "Oh no, Jimmy's really getting pist off!?", the first boy retaliated. "Just shove off and let me be," Jimmy answered. "Now youââ¬â¢re gonna die, Nigger", one of the white Boy said. It is like this everyday, everywhere, and everytime, people suffer discrimination. All because they have differences amongst each other. Different beliefs, different cultures, different skin colour, all of these act like building blocks to help construct what we know as Racism. Racism has become one of the many burdens amongst multi-cultural worlds like Canada and the States. Racism is a part of each and every one of us. No doubt, we are all racist, but this the term racism has been used too loosely. Racism has been mutated to such an extent that it could be a reason for war, a symbol of terrorism, and even an excuse for neglecting. Is that all there is to it? No, actually it is just the beginning. Racism is just like warfare in which there is no shelter and nobody is neutral. Nobody is exempt from this demon. He has haunted us with a bitter curse. On one occasion I remember, nobody would play with me at school. I would walk around by myself and ask people if we could play together. Everywhere that I went, like the process of induction, everyone would avoid me. Like two inducted poles with the same polarity, they would just shimmer off into the distance and continue to do whatever they're doing. Because of racial differences, they neglect me. People are afraid of the unknown, and it is this difference amongst people that spread rumors and distrust amongst people. Corrupting our thoughts and reasons, we get accustomed to thinking differences are omens. Amongst smaller kids, there is no difficulty in getting them to all play together.

International Joint Venture Stakeholders
As for the media reports on possible child labor and substandard wages, letââ¬â¢s recall an old newspaper saying: ââ¬Å"Never pick fights with anyone who buys ink by the barrel. â⬠That is, as a CEO, I would not pick fights with the media, but to act promptly, discuss the issue with the CEO of Mitsamatsu, and correct the inaccurate news without casting blame. There is no doubt that whichever the decision I make will ultimately effects the shareholders. However, it would beneficial in all aspects to join Mitsamatsu company if they are truly a legit corporation; it could also have a very negative effect if the accusation are true.Joint venture with Mitsamatsu with profit shareholders if it is a legit company, but if indeed the accusation is true, it could compromise the U. S. -based corporation for the worse. I would first hold off on any commitments until all the details are on the table and there is clear evidence there are no illegal and/or immoral activities taking place. A meeting with the appropriate officials would definitely be the agenda and once clarifications are made, the appropriate decisions could be acted upon. Not only the shareholders will be affected with the decision, it will also directly affect the employees of the U.S. corporation. Without clarification with evidence the employees would suffer anxiety and depression, also feel in a state of instability, because their future would depend on the final decision of the joint venture. If joint venture is legit and processed, it could mean more jobs and even expanded opportunities for advancement of position and pay for the current employees. But if joint venture goes through and indeed the accusations are true and the news hits the markets and the stocks, it could lead to a lot of loss in profits, which would in turn mean more cuts, and loss of jobs.In order to keep employees from going into panic mode and spreading rumors and decreasing productivity and increasing errors, I would set up a temporary department to address the employees needs and to answer all their questions. Also a department relaying up to date information to employees and shareholders would keep everyone at easy and abreast with all the new developments so they do not waste time looking for untrue information elsewhere. The decision could also affect employees in Asia. Joint venture could also mean more jobs in Asia and maybe even higher pay for them and more positions available. If joint venture does not go through and accusation are true, it may mean a lot of employees in that company may end up losing their jobs as well. Even though they may have not been being paid enough; they were still making money to make ends meet and that cut could be detrimental to the employees there as well as their families. They may even get reimbursed for loss or unfair pay in the past if appropriate legal actions can be taken, but some employees live day to day for just even food in outside countries and the delay of income may also affect them negatively. If the joint venture is made there may be opportunities for employees from the US working in ASIA but under unstandardized conditions, which may not be at the best interest of the employees. True, sending employees to Asia will open up more job positions, but it will be very risky if there are no standards set there. A good corporation at the end of the day wants what is best for their shareholders and employees.
